The Everlasting Rewards Lessons from the Hadith on Martyrdom

We asked Abdullah (i.e. Ibn Masud) about this verse: And do not regard those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead, rather are they alive with their Lord, being provided for (Quran Chapter 3 Verse 169).

He said: We asked about that and the Prophet (pbuh) said: Their souls are in the insides of green birds having lanterns suspended from the Throne, roaming freely in Paradise where they please, then taking shelter in those lanterns. So their Lord cast a glance at them (1) and said:

Do you wish for anything? They said: What shall we wish for when we roam freely in Paradise where we please? And thus did He do to them three times. When they say that they would not be spared from being asked [again], they said:

O Lord, we would like for You to put back our souls into our bodies so that we might fight for Your sake once again. And when He saw that they were not in need of anything they were let be. (1) i.e. at those who had been killed in the cause of Allah. It was related by Muslim (also by at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah).

عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ . قَالَ : سَأَلْنَا ـ أَوْ سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَاللهِ (أَيْ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ) عَنْ هَذِهِ الايةِ :

: ولَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا في سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَمْواتاً بَلْ أَحْياءُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ )) ـ قَالَ : أَمَا إِنَّا قَدْ سَأَلْنَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ))

أَرْواحُهُمْ في جَوْفِ طَيْرٍ خُضْرٍ ، لَهَا قَنَادِيلُ مُعَلَّقَةٌ بِالعَرْشِ ، تَسْرَحُ مِنَ الجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ شَاءَتْ ، ثُمَّ َ تَأْوِي إِلي تِلْكَ القَنَادِيلِ ، فَأَطَّلَعَ إِلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ اطِّلَاعَةً فَقَالَ : هَلْ تَشْتَهُونَ شَيْئاً ؟ قَالُوا : أَيَّ شَيْءٍ نَشْتَهِي ، وَ نَحْنُ نَسْرَحُ مِنَ الجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ شِئْنا ؟ فَفَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بِهِمْ ثَلَاثََ مَرَّاتٍ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا أَنَّهُمْ لَنْ يُتْرَكُوا مِنْ أَنْ يُسْأَلُوا ، قَالُوا : يَا رَبِّ ، نُرِيْدُ أَنْ تَرُدَّ أَرْوَاحَنَا في أَجْسَادِنَا ؛ حَتَّى نُقْتَلَ في سَبِيلِكَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَي . فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ حَاجَةٌ تُرِكُوا .

عن مسروق قال: سألنا أو سألت عبدالله بن مسعود عن هذه الآية: “ولا تحسبن الذين قتلوا في سبيل الله أمواتا بل أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون” قال: أرواحهم في جوف طير خضر، لها قناديل معلقة بالعرش، تسرح من الجنة حيث شاءت، ثم تأوي إلى تلك القناديل، فأطلع إليهم ربهم اطلعة،

فقال: هل تشتهون شيئا؟ قالوا: أي شيء نشتهي، ونحن نسرح من الجنة حيث شئنا؟ ففعل ذلك بهم ثلاث مرات، فلما رأوا أن ليس لهم حاجة تركوا. قالوا: يا رب، نريد أن ترد أرواحنا في أجسادنا، حتى نقتل في سبيلك مرة أخرى. فلما رأى أن ليس لهم حاجة تركوا.

Urdu

 مسروق نے روایت کی ہے: ہم نے عبد اللہ بن مسعود سے یہ آیت پوچھی: “اور متخون مت کرو جو لوگ اللہ کے راستے میں ہلاک ہوئے، تم انہیں مردہ مت سمجھو، بلکہ انہیں ان کے رب کے پاس زندہ پایا جاتا ہے، جو رزق ہوتے ہیں۔” عبد اللہ بن مسعود نے کہا: ان کی روحیں ہری پرندوں کے جوہر میں ہیں، جن کے پیچھے عرش پر جلتی ہوئی لالچیں ہیں،

جو جنت میں جہاں چاہا جائے گا پرواہ کرتے ہیں، پھر ان لالچیوں میں واپس آتے ہیں۔ ان کے رب نے ان پر نظر ڈالی اور پوچھا: کیا تم کچھ چاہتے ہو؟ انہوں نے کہا: ہم کچھ بھی چاہیں، اور ہم جہاں چاہاں وہاں سرکتے ہیں۔ یہ عمل تین بار ہوا، جب وہ دیکھے کہ انہیں چھوڑ دیا جائے گا، تو انہوں نے کہا:

اے رب، ہمیں چاہئے کہ ہماری روحیں ہمارے جسموں میں واپس آئیں، تاکہ ہم پھر تمہارے راستے میں ملتوی ہوں۔ جب انہوں نے دیکھا کہ ان کو چھوڑا نہیں جائے گا، تو انہوں نے چھوڑ دیا۔

English

Masruq narrated: We asked or I asked Abdullah ibn Mas’ud about this verse: “And do not think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.

” He said: Their souls are in the bodies of green birds, with lamps hanging from the Throne. They roam freely in Paradise wherever they please, and then return to those lamps. Their Lord looks at them and asks, “Do you desire anything?

” They say, “Whatever we wish, as we roam freely in Paradise.” This happened three times. When they realized they would not be left alone, they said, “O Lord, we want our souls to be returned to our bodies, so that we may be killed in Your path once again.” When it was seen that they had no need, they were left.
