Mysteries of Faith Lessons from a Hadith on Inner Virtues and Spiritual Contentment

Allah (mighty and sublime be He) said: Truly of those devoted to Me the one I most favor is a believer who is of meager means and much given to prayer, who has been particular in the worship of his Lord and has obeyed Him inwardly1, who was obscure among people and not pointed out,

and whose sustenance was just sufficient to provide for him yet he bore this patiently. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) shook his hand and said: Death will have come early to him, his mourners will have been few, his estate scant.

1 i.e. he has not been ostentatious in his obedience. It was related by at-Tirmidhi (also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ibn Majah). Its chain of authorities is sound.

عَنْ أَبي أُمامةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَن النَّبِيّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَ سَلَّمَ قَالَ

قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : إِنَّ أَغْبَطَ أَوْلِيَائي عِنْدِي لَمُوْمِنُ خَفِيفُ الخَاذِ ذُو حَظِّ مِنَ الصَّلاةِ أَحْسَنَ عِبَادَتَ رَبِّهِ وَ أَطَاعَهُ فِي السَّرِّ وَ كَانَ غَامِضًا فِي النَّاسِ لا يُشارُ إِلَيْهِ بِالأَصابِعِ وَ كَانَ رِزْقُهُ كفافًا فَصَبَرَ عَلى ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ نَفَضَ بِيَدِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ : عُجِّلَتْ مَنِيَّتُهُ قَلَّتْ بَواكِيهِ قَلَّ تُرَاثُهُ

قالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: “إِنَّ أَغْبَطَ أَوْلِيَائِي عِنْدِي لَمُؤْمِنٌ خَفِيفُ الخَاطِئِ، ذُو حَظِّ مِنَ الصَّلاةِ أَحْسَنَ عِبَادَتَ رَبِّهِ وَأَطَاعَهُ فِي السَّرِّ، وَكَانَ غَامِضًا فِي النَّاسِ، لَا يُشَارُ إِلَيْهِ بِالأَصَابِعِ، وَكَانَ رِزْقُهُ كَفَافًا، فَصَبَرَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ نَفَضَ بِيَدِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: عُجِّلَتْ مَنِيَّتُهُ، قَلَّتْ بَوَاكِيهِ، قَلَّتْ تُرَاثُهُ.

Urdu

اللہ تعالی نے فرمایا: “میرے ولیوں میں سے سب سے محبت کرنے والا، جو مومن ہوکر خفیفِ خطا ہو، جس کی نمازیں اچھی ہوں اور جو اپنے رب کی عبادت میں بہترین ہو، اور جو راز میں اطاعت گزارہ ہو، اور جو لوگوں کے درمیان پوشیدہ ہو، لوگ اس پر انگشت نہیں اٹھاتے، اور جس کا رزق کفاف ہو، وہ اس پر صبر کرے اور پھر ہاتھ کو ہلاتا ہے اور کہتا ہے: اس کی موت جلد ہوگئی، اس کے ورثہ کم ہیں.”

Allah, the Almighty, said: “Indeed, the most beloved of My allies to Me is a believing servant who, despite his shortcomings, is diligent in offering excellent prayers and obedient to Me in secrecy. He remains mysterious among people, not drawing attention to himself, and his sustenance is sufficient. He endures with patience, then he gestures with his hand and says, ‘His death has come quickly, his inheritors are few.
